HYMN SPOTLIGHT
Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise (1867)
William Chalmers Smith, 1824-1908
This hymn finds its inspiration in 1 Timothy 1:17, “Now unto the King, eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.” In the first, second, and final stanzas, blinding light is the prevailing metaphor for God’s glory. The theme of the third stanza is the eternal God as the Giver of Life.
