Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy (1759)
Joseph Hart, 1712-1768
Although he was brought up in a devout home and received a good education, the author of this hymn spent many years struggling to find his own faith in Christ. It was not until he was 47 years old that he made a profession of faith. The bulk of his most passionate hymns were written in the two years following his conversion. Although this is the only one of his hymns still in common use today, Hart was one of the most popular hymn writers of his generation both in England and America.
