HYMN SPOTLIGHT – DECEMBER 2, 2018

HYMN SPOTLIGHT

Blessed Be the God of Israel (1969)

James Quinn, 1919-2010

The author of this hymn was a Scottish Jesuit priest who set out to paraphrase portions of the Scriptures in contemporary English. This is his setting of today’s sermon text, “The Song of Zechariah” from Luke 1. Notice that the lines of the hymn do not rhyme. That is because Quinn did his best to render the text as faithfully as he could to the original. Whether or not it rhymed was not important. The hymn tune FOREST GREEN is adapted from an English folk song by Ralph Vaughan-Williams. It is the tune normally associated with the Christmas carol “O Little Town of Bethlehem” throughout Great Britain
