HYMN SPOTLIGHT

Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven (1834)

Henry Francis Lyte 1793-1847

This hymn is a paraphrase of portions of Psalm 103, a psalm that has been described by one scholar as “one of the finest blossoms on the tree of biblical faith.” In both the psalm and the hymn, every creature in heaven and one earth is summoned to join in the anthem of praise. This call to praise begins with the individual (“Praise, my soul, the King of heaven”), then invites the faith community to add their voices (“Praise Him for His grace and favour to our fathers in distress”) and concludes with an invitation for spiritual beings to join in as well (“Angels in the height, adore Him.”)
