Jesus is Calling (1883)
Fanny J. Crosby, 1820-1915
The scripture reference that inspired the writing of this hymn is John 11:28. In this story, Jesus arrives at the house of Mary and Martha before the raising of their brother Lazarus from the dead. As he approaches the house, Martha tells her sister, “Arise, he is calling you.” The writer of the tune for this hymn was a Baptist minister named George Stebbins. Stebbins wrote that, when he first was presented with the words of the hymn, he really did not think they were of anything more than ordinary merit. He admitted, forty years after he wrote the tune, that he was very surprised that the hymn had become as popular as it had for so many years.
