HYMN SPOTLIGHT

O Worship the King (1833)

Robert Grant, 1779-1838

This hymn is a rather loose paraphrase of portions of Psalm 104, the spoken call to worship. It utilizes some of the most beautiful and picturesque language in the entire hymnbook to describe the greatness and majesty of God. Here are a few examples: “You are clothed in honor, wrapped in light as with a garment” in the psalm becomes “whose robe is light” in the hymn. “You stretch out the heavens like a tent” becomes “Pavillioned in splendor and girded in praise.” “You make the clouds Your chariot, You ride on the wings of the wind” becomes “His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,/ And dark is His path on the wings of the storm.”
