HYMN SPOTLIGHT

How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds, (1779)

John Newton, 1725-1807

John Newton was an Anglican minister who wrote hymns for the weekly Wednesday night bible Study that he held at his house adjacent to the church.  In 1779, he compile 280 of his hymns into a book that became known as “Olney Hymns,” after the name of the parish that he served.  This hymn book quickly became popular on both sides of the Atlantic.  In addition to this hymn, other hymns by Newton that are still in common use today include “Sometimes a light surprises,” “May the grace of Christ our Savior,” and the hymn which is undoubtedly his greatest hit, “Amazing grace! How sweet the sound.”
