Letter from the Pastor

Welcome to the First Baptist Church of Lynchburg, VA website! I am glad that you’ve taken a few moments to check out our website and hope that you will find information that will be helpful to you.

First Baptist is a warm and caring group of Christians dedicated to living “the faith once delivered to the saints” (Jude 1:3) in a constantly changing world. Posted near the main entrance of our sanctuary, there is a sign that reads “Celebrating God’s Love with Classic Worship in a Historic Setting.” Let me unpack a little of what that means to us:

Celebrating God’s Love

At its most basic, the Christian faith is the good news of God’s love and grace through His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus told his followers, “I have come that you might have life, and have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10) At First Baptist, we are committed to celebrating life in Christ and sharing that life with others who have yet to experience it. God’s love—it is something worth celebrating!

Classic Worship

The word “classic” means “timeless”, that which never goes out of style. Our worship at First Baptist freely borrows from the many Christian traditions to which we are heir. During the course of a typical worship service, you will experience a time of extended silence. We find silence to be an integral part of worship, as we gather ourselves together in God’s presence, quiet our hearts   before Him, and attune ourselves for listening to the Holy Spirit. You will find music that embraces the entire spectrum of Christian experience. From songs that give voice to praising God , to songs that teach the vital truths of what we believe, the music is chosen to heighten our awareness and experience of God in our midst. You will experience sermons that are focused on scriptural truth, wrestling with how God’s Word intersects with our daily lives. They are sermons that will engage your heart while not insulting your intellect.

A Historic Setting

First Baptist worships in a neo-Gothic sanctuary that was constructed in the 1880’s and dedicated in 1886. It is one of the most beautiful worship spaces in all of Lynchburg—a sacred place whose beauty just makes one want to worship. I invite you to check out the slideshow on our Homepage and go to the “Photos” tab to see what I mean. With its vaulted ceiling, its stained glass windows, and its intricate woodwork, it is a room that communicates the beauty and majesty of God without a word being spoken.  As I sometimes sit in the sanctuary and think of the thousands of Christian believers who have experienced God in this place over the last 130 years, I am filled with a sense of awe and wonder. And people are still experiencing God in this place.

Thank you for letting me share a little bit about First Baptist Church with you. If you live in the Lynchburg area and are looking for a church home, I hope that you will come to visit. If I can answer any questions or be of any other help, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Paul Dakin, Pastor
