SERMON – More Than a Snuggie – Rev. Paul Dakin\
SCRIPTURE – John 14:8-17, 25-27
HYMN SPOTLIGHT
Come, Thou Almighty King (c.1757)
Anonymous
The earliest known publication of this hymn is in the form of a tract with the title “An Hymn to the Trinity.” It was also included in the famous evangelist George Whitefield’s collection of hymns published that same year. The hymn follows a pattern that was popular at the time – a stanza of praise each to Father, Son and Holy Spirit, concluding with a Trinitarian doxology. The third stanza references John 14:26, where Jesus calls the Holy Spirit “The Comforter.”
