I Know that My Redeemer Lives (1775)

Samuel Medley, 1738-1799

Bored with his life in London, a seventeen year old Medley left his home to apprentice himself in the British Royal Navy. He was severely wounded in action four years later off the coast of Africa and went home to recuperate at the home of his grandfather, who was a deacon in a Baptist church. He was converted a year later and then answered God’s call to be a minister. But he never forgot the experiences of his early sailor’s life. The day before he died, he confided to a friend, “I am a poor shattered bark just about to gain the blissful harbor, and oh! How sweet will be the port after the storm!”
