ANTHEM – When I Survey the Wondrous Cross – Chancel Choir
HYMN SPOTLIGHT
Great is Thy Faithfulness (1923)
Thomas Obadiah Chisholm, 1866-1960
After the author had to retire early from the Methodist ministry due to ill health, he turned his hand to writing poetry. This poem was among the first hymns that he submitted for publication. Initially, it became well-known through its use at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. But it became even more popular when it was included in most of the Billy Graham Crusades of the 1950’s and ‘60’s. The text is based on Lamentations 3:22-23. “It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.’’
