SERMON: Respecting the Call – Rev. Paul Dakin

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 4:12-23

ANTHEM: Footsteps of Jesus – Chancel Choir

HYMN SPOTLIGHT

Dear Lord and Father of Mankind, (1872)

John Greenleaf Whittier, 1807-1892

Whittier was one of the most popular American poets of his generation. He never intended to write any hymns, but several extracts from his poetry eventually made it into the hymnal. (one that was particularly popular in earlier generations was “Brother Man, Fold to Thy Heart.”) Whittier was a Quaker who was active in many social causes of his day. In response to a question posed by a 15 year old boy as to what he should do with his life, Whittier responded, “My lad, if thou wouldst win success, join thyself to some unpopular noble cause.”
