Francis of Assisi, c. 1182-1226
The life of St. Francis of Assisi is most astounding. Born into wealth, he forsook it all for a life of preaching, charitable works with the sick, and rebuilding broken down church buildings. It is said that he even preached to the birds and that they listened! An early environmentalist, his poem “Canticle of the Sun” (the basis for this hymn) is the oldest religious poem written in the Italian language. Francis saw all of nature and everything praising God.
