I Know Whom I Have Believed (1883)
“Major” Daniel Webster Whittle, 1840-1901
God used the most trying of circumstances to convert the author of this hymn. Whittle enlisted in the Union army in August 1862 and fought in the Civil War. He was wounded and captured during the Battle of Shiloh the following year, which resulted in the amputation of one of his arms. He became converted after reading the New Testament while convalescing in a Confederate prison hospital in Richmond. After the war, Whittle became an evangelist and worked with the well-known preacher Dwight L. Moody. He also wrote around 200 hymns, including this one, which is one of his most famous.
