HYMN SPOTLIGHT
Work, for the Night is Coming (1854)
Annie Louise Walker, 1836-1907
Originally from England, the author was 18 years old and living in Montreal when she wrote this hymn. In 1861, it was collected with some of her other verse into a small book called Leaves from the Backwoods. She moved back to England in 1863 where she made a living as a governess and an author. As a writer, she published six novels and another, much larger, collection of poetry. The scripture basis for this hymn is found in Jesus’ words in John 9:4, “As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming when no one can work.”
