O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee (1879)
Washington Gladden, 1836-1918
Dr. Gladden was one of a number of ministers who embraced what was called “The Social Gospel Movement” in late 19th Century America. During the 32 years that he served as the pastor of the First Congregational Church in Columbus, OH, he was a tireless advocate of applying the gospel’s teachings to all of life – including the areas of business and government. In addition to being pastor, he helped to arbitrate the Telegrapher’s Strike (1883) and the Hocking Valley Coal Strike (1884-1885). Both of these strikes occured over the demand for fairer wages and better working conditions for employees. As one sings this hymn, one can hear the echoes of the social gospel in its words.
